Service Panel Upgrades — Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my panel needs an upgrade?
Common signs: your panel is rated 100 amps or less, breakers trip when you run multiple appliances, you see Zinsco or Federal Pacific equipment (both have known safety issues), or you're adding an EV charger, Powerwall, or other large electrical load. We run a load calculation at the free site assessment and tell you straight whether an upgrade is actually needed — many homes don't need one.
How much does a 200-amp panel upgrade cost?
Panel upgrades vary widely based on your existing service, meter location, and what the utility requires — so we quote after the free on-site assessment rather than guessing. There's no trip charge, and if you're bundling the upgrade with an EV charger or Powerwall installation, doing both together typically saves on permits and labor.
How long does a panel upgrade take?
Installation day is typically 4-8 hours, with power off for most of it. The longer timeline is permitting and utility coordination, usually 1-3 weeks depending on your city. We handle the permits, the utility scheduling, and the inspection so you don't have to chase anyone.
Do I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger or Powerwall?
Not always. Many 200-amp homes have plenty of capacity, and even some 100-amp homes can support a charger with load management. We do the math during your free site assessment — and if a smaller fix works (like a load-sharing device), we'll recommend that instead of an unnecessary upgrade.
